There are good things and bad things about electronic references. The good thing about them is the fact that you can have a virtually limitless amount of information packed into a very small device. The problem with them tends to be that the more information you pack in, the more difficult they become to navigate. Informed Publishing has addressed this by integrating great information with a simple interactive interface!

When you open up the RN Pocket Guide you’ll see a small menu bar at the bottom of the screen with four buttons. The button on the left of this menu will bring up a list of all the topics that are covered within this app. There are all kinds of topics covered from Cardiac and Respiratory down to Mental Health and Gastrointestinal.

When you find the topic that you need information on, touching it will bring up a list of articles to read. What really makes this app great though is that the information itself is interactive. If the article you’re reading mentions a test that you might want to perform it will give you a link to that test within the app, or if it references a phone number it will give you a link to dial that phone number directly.

Besides the articles full of information, this app also offers a variety of different medical calculators. You can access the full list of them by touching the “Calculators” button at the bottom of the screen. Many of them are also available from within various information in the “Topics” section as well.

Another great feature of this app is the “Search/Bookmarks” feature. Anytime you find and are reading an article that you think you might need later, you can add a bookmark to it by touching the “+” button at the bottom of the screen. You can then access your list of bookmarks either from the main menu or by touching the bookmark button from within an article.

You can switch from bookmarks to the search feature by touching the icon in the upper right corner of the screen. As you type information into the search bar you’ll see live updates of information below. Touching any of the articles that pop up will take you straight to them. This makes it extremely easy to quickly find information on a particular topic. No hunting through topics and subtopics, just type one good key word and head there directly!

If you’re a nurse and you have or used to carry a pocket guide of some sort, this is an app that you should definitely check out. US Immigration FAQ is pretty much exactly what it says it is. A handy guide to all of the rules for visiting or immigrating to the US. The information contained in this App is current (as of the last update) and informative for anyone wishing to learn more about the policies and procedures for traveling to the USA – for business or pleasure. Here’s the introduction from the Developers directly;

Actually, the section on Business travelers is probably what is going to be the most popular, this is a fantastic guide for people who travel often, or who are looking for information on the go about this topic. While most of the Business section deals with immigrating for investing, some of it does cover regular business trips as well.

In fact, this App covers almost all eventualities when it comes to obtaining visas and work permits, residence and green cards. The overall topics contained within are;

And each section contains many chapters about the specific procedures, forms and documents unique to each situation.

The information is provided in a very readable format – and contrary to some legal or government documents which can get confusing, its laid out in a way that will give you all the information you need based on your specific situation and needs.

Of course, this is also a fantastic tool for students who are learning immigration law and procedures. While not heavy on the legal aspect of things, it does provide easy to understand directions and details that can be used as a great study-guide.

While the App is laid out really well, and is easy to navigate I found it unfortunate that it wasn’t lacking a couple of features that would make it much more useful for business people and students alike. 1) Highlighting certain passages. This would be a wonderful way to come back to something you particularly wanted to remember like form information, or a particularly important procedure that you just learned about. If not that, then at least, 2) Bookmarks – to flag certain chapters within sections. As this App is so comprehensive it can get difficult to remember “where did I read that particular thing about student visa limitations?”, having your own bookmarks page would be wonderful.

Other than those to criticisms I think that if you’re looking for a handy guide to quickly look up immigration info, this is it. There aren’t many others on the App store, so while it might be one of your only options, at least it’s informative and well written. Try it out, via the link below.

ROK Media has created a simple but very useful App that translates any text into several languages and recites them aloud on your iPhone for traveling, communication, business – you name it.

This App could not be simpler. Insert your text on top, select which language to translate it into and the text appears below, with the option to hear the App speak it to you. The languages included in version 2 are English, French, Spanish, German, Turkish and Catalan.

From what I could tell each Language had its own built-in female voice that read the translated text, however because I’m not as fluent in French or Spanish as I’d like to be, I couldn’t really tell if the pronunciations were correct or not. It’s probably safe to assume that a native speaker would be able to figure out what you are saying by you mimicking the voice – or you could always play the audio for whomever you’re trying to communicate with. Although, you could always show them the translated text as well. So there’s a multitude of uses for this program.

An addition use that I didn’t realize until much later was that English is one of the included Languages that you can Translate to. Meaning, that if you find some street sign, instructions, or information in one of the supported languages you can translate it back to English with this App too.

Also, fantastic news for speakers of the other languages, because this is the perfect App for traveling to English Speaking countries – the audio speaking voice of the English Speaker is crystal clear – as good as any Text to Audio I’ve ever heard.

Right now Rok has the Lingo Translation App on sale for 1/2 off – only $0.99 so you should pick it up while now, while it’s still cheap. You never know when you’ll need it, especially if you travel often!

If you enjoy riding bikes and would like to save yourself some serious money at the bike-repair shop, Bike Doctor may be just the right medicine! Bike Doctor is an app that will give you detailed instructions on how to perform various maintenance/repairs on your bike!

The various repairs and maintenance procedures in this app are sorted by the areas of the bike that you are working on. When you open up the app you’ll be greeted by a list of all the categories that are available. To the right of each category is a description of how many repairs are available in that category.

Touching any category from the main menu will take you to a list of the repairs in that category. When you find the repair you are interested in and open it up the first screen you see tells you everything that you will need to perform the repair. These lists include everything that is necessary from wrenches and screw drivers to things like grease or cleaning rags.

Once you have opened up a repair to view there is a small bar that appears at the bottom of the screen. On the left side of this bar are “Prev” and “Next” buttons that allow you to navigate through all of the information. I really liked the way the repairs were divided up into separate screens. It made it much easier to keep track of exactly where you were as you are performing the repair.

When you finish your repair all you have to do is touch the “done” button in the bottom right corner to go back to the previous menu that you were in. To head back to the main menu screen from there you’ll also need to touch the “Bike Doctor” button in the upper left corner of the screen.

Another really nice feature of this app is the Bike diagram. Touching the “Bike” button in the upper right corner of the main menu will bring up a full-screen diagram of a bicycle with a bunch of little red circles on it.  Touching any of the small red circles will take you to a list of repairs that can be performed on that area of the bike. This feature is especially nice if you’re not familiar with the names of all the different parts of a bike.

The information you’ll find in this app is detailed and thorough. While you might find some of it by just scouring the internet, it is highly unlikely that you’ll find it laid out as well as it is in this app. The pictures that are included are really great too because they help you see what is being described as you read.

Whether you’re a serious bike enthusiast, or someone that would just like to learn to take care of their bike themselves, Bike Doctor is a great reference that you can carry in your pocket in your iPhone or iPod Touch! The app is currently available for $4.99 and the developers have stated that they will be updating the app with new content in the future. Download your copy today!

One of my favorite things about my iPhone is the texting application. It makes it extremely easy to keep track of your conversations with individuals, and with iOS4 it’s very quick to switch to it and then back to whatever you were doing before. With that said the cost of texting can add up quickly, and is not even available if you just have an iPod Touch. Whatever your situation Messagey! is coming to your rescue!

! is an app that will allow you to send and receive text messages on any device running iOS. It offers a variety of features, including push notifications and a unique interface that makes switching between conversations even faster!

When you open up Messagey! for the first time you’ll be asked if you want to use it in “Messagey!” mode or in “Classic” mode. I would recommend that you at least try the Messagey! mode. Classic mode will basically behave like the built-in Messages app, while Messagey! mode will allow you to switch between conversations by swiping side to side!

Once you decide what mode to use you’ll also need to sign up for a messagey account. This will allow you to both send messages and also receive them on your device. The process for signing up is fairly quick, and I didn’t have any problems with it myself.

Once you get everything set up you’ll be greeted by the main screen. To add a new conversation all you have to do is touch the “+” button at the top of the screen. This will bring up a pop-up window with a list of all your contacts to choose from.

Once you choose a contact to start a conversation with you’ll notice that the name of that contact will show up in the bar at the top of the screen. This is the bar that you will use to switch between conversations. To switch conversations all you have to do is drag that same bar to the left or the right.

While the core of this app is nice, what really sets it off is the customization of it. If you touch the settings button in the lower left corner of the screen you’ll have the ability to do all kinds of things. One really nice feature is the ability to have messages from others with Messagey! automatically forwarded to the app when it recognizes your email address or phone number.

Another cool feature is the ability to turn the background of the app into whatever your camera sees. This makes it possible for you to type text messages or emails while you’re still paying attention to what’s in front of you!

There are two ways to go with this app, free and paid. The free version of the app has a limit of 30 text messages a day and is ad-supported. If you want to get rid of these limitations you can do so by paying either $0.99 a year or $1.99 for a lifetime subscription!

While this obviously isn’t as deeply integrated into the iPhone as the Messages app it can be a great way to save some money!  The texts do go through through fairly quickly as well, but there is a little bit of a delay occasionally.  With that said, this is still really a must have though app for iPod Touch users as it can add texting to your device for free! Whether you own an iPhone, an iPod touch, or even an iPad you should at least give this app a look because it is hard to beat free!  You may find that you like it even more than you thought you would!

I’ve used nearly every single iPhone remote desktop viewing App there is. It used to be a very important part of my home theater/computer set up, and the entire time I’ve owned an iOS Device, I’ve had an App that works with the VNC Server, so I was delighted to finally try out the newly released RealVNC Viewer for the iPad (which is a universal App which also works on the iPhone).

For those of you not familiar with VNC, they are the leading software developers for remote desktop viewing on the PC, and Mac. You can connect to your PC or Mac Desktop from any web-enabled computer, via either the web interface or the VNC Viewer software, so long as you’re running the VNC Server on your home computer. There are three different levels of the software, each which offers different features and OS Compatibility – Check here for details. For the simple user – the Personal Edition is perfect, but for businesses and Mac users, the Enterprise Edition is best.

Like I’ve previously said, there are quire a few remote desktop Apps on the App Store, and most of which actually connect to the VNC Server – having an official product from the Real VNC Crew is a treat, this App is built from the ground up for ease of use and functionality, and runs beautifully on the iPad. Not only does the wider iPad screen offer a better view of your desktops, but it’s much easier to work on files and projects with the larger space. One of the features I really appreciate, that some of the other Remote Desktop Apps don’t have is that it lets you select how to interact with your desktop either by keeping your mouse fixed – and moving the screen around it, or by allowing your finger to both move the mouse as well as the desktop view – my personal favorite method. The Zoom (by pinching) works perfectly, and the entire time I was testing (several times over the course of several days) I never once crashed. Which brings me to another point – VNC Viewer can automatically change and configure your resolution and performance based on your connection speed.

As for typing, there is also not only a full keyboard (which includes ctrl, alt, arrows, esc, and more), but also a command or shortcut keyboard which takes up just a small area of space so that you don’t have to keep using half of your screen when you want to do things like use the F-Keys or Arrow Keys. One feature missing on the App that the regular PC Viewer has is document transfer, which would be absolutely brilliant – but I understand why they didn’t include it (as it might be data heavy and/or a memory hog). The App however does have a text copy/paste transfer, which is so much more convenient and useful than you might even think. I used it several times to copy urls, and email addresses to save onto my iPad.

Overall though, you should trust the experts in this field, the Official Real VNC App is built with the power VNC user in mind. People who use multiple computers, on multiple OS’s with Multiple screen resolutions, etc are going to find this a real treat. This App was made for power business use – but even Free Edition users are going to love having access to their computer from anywhere – I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t find this useful.

While, yes, there are cheap or even free Remote Desktop Apps on the App Store – I highly recommend VNC Viewer for professional and even personal use. The price is really very reasonable for this powerful trustworthy tool, a reflection on the quality of software that you are getting.

MyWorld is an App which allows you to store and share your Photos by location. Using integrated GPS location you can set an album to a particular destination and upload photos directly to your Facebook or Flickr account albums.

It sounds pretty simple, and it is, but this App is a phenomenal convenience for organizing photos from any special occasion by location. You start by opening a new Album – you can either select a location on the Map or have the App find your location directly. Within your Album you can add photos, audio or video (depending on your device) and have all of the media in one simple folder for that particular location or event.

Where this App really shines in the integration with Sharing and Social Media. Firstly, Bump is integrated into both the Map view as well as the album sharing page – so you can easily Bump your albums to another MyWorld iPhone user. Couldn’t be easier. However, if you want to simply post your pics via Facebook, Twitter or Flickr – that’s available too. You add the authorizations within each album and every time you update your album, it’ll update the social media site of your choice, or you can send specific media items individually! I tried my own with Flickr and was impressed that it uploaded quickly, creating a specific set within my photofeed for this Album.

Something else you might not expect but is a very smart inclusion is the ability to Email the media directly or also including a KML (Google Earth) File. Or, if you want to keep it simple you can copy and send the Google Maps shortcut URL created for your album, also listed on the sharing screen.

Finally you can maintain a list of the people who are either in the photos, or were with you at the time by including them directly from your iPhone Contact List or manually entering them.

The only drawback I could find while I was testing out the App is that to add the media to each album you have to add one photo at a time – which can be bothersome if you’re create the album after the event. I was trying to group together a bunch of photos I had taken about a year ago but gave up after the fifth or sixth because it was taking so long. If there is an option to import many photos into the album at once, I did not find it, and hopefully if this isn’t an feature now, it will be included soon.

This App could have many uses – not only as an organization for events and places. If you’re interested in keeping track of the location of where your photos were taken for whatever reason, you should seriously consider getting MyWorld. It’s well designed and full of sharing features that you might not find on other Photo Album Apps.
