ToucHotel 1 208x300 ToucHotel iPhone App ReviewDo you travel a lot? If so you’d probably be happy to have an easy way to book hotel rooms without talking to a hotel representative! ToucHotel uses an extremely basic search feature to quickly connect you with hotels in the area that you’ll be staying in!


When you open up ToucHotel you’ll see a search bar at the top of the screen. Below that search bar is a list of all of your recent searches if you have any yet. To find a hotel in your area all you have to do is type the name of the city in the search barToucHotel 2 208x300 ToucHotel iPhone App Review at the top of the screen. Once you do a list of matching results will show up below, and all you have to do is touch one of them to view all of the hotels in that city!


When you touch a city to search inside you’ll be taken to a screen with two scroll-wheels. You can use these to select what day you’ll be arriving and how many days you plan on staying. One thing that I noticed pretty quickly with this app is that there is no way to specify what state you are searching for a city in. For example; there are 39 “Springfield”’s in the United States, but if you search for Springfield you’ll only be shown results for one of them.


With that said, if you do find a hotel that you’re interested in the city you’re aiming for all you have to do is touch it to bring up a screen full of information on it. At the top of this screen is a picture (which you can click on to see more), the name of the hotel, the Hotel’s rating, and four buttons to access info about the hotel, a map of where it is, photos and to share information on the hotel with someone!


At the bottom of every hotel screen you’ll see a list of room types that are available with their current price. Touching any of them will bring up a confirmation screen that will tell you everything about the ToucHotel 4 208x300 ToucHotel iPhone App Reviewroom and offer a link to a page where you can actually book the room! My overall impressions of this app were that it is very easy to pick up and use quickly. However, if you have difficulty locating the right hotel(s) in the right cities there is not really any way to do an “advanced search.” You’ll just have to scroll through the results until you can find what you’re looking for!


All things said, the app is free, and does do what it claims to do! If you’ve been looking for the easiest/quickest way to book a room this may be what you’re looking for. If; however, you’re looking for an extremely powerful tool to locate and compare hotel rooms worldwide you may want to check out ToucHotel for free in the App Store today!

iStair 1 208x300 iStair iPhone App ReviewIf you’ve got a regular workout routine and stairs are something that are included in it, you may want to check out iStair. iStair is an app that will count how many steps you’ve taken for you! How does it accomplish this you ask? Through the use of the iPhone’s built-in accelerometer!


When you open up this app you’re taken straight to the main screen. At the top you’ll see a large number that shows how many steps you’ve taken, and just below is a “Reset” button iStair 2 208x300 iStair iPhone App Reviewand a “i” button. To use the app you’re supposed to just hold it in your hand as you walk up the stairs. I was kind of expecting the app to ask me to just put it in my pocket, but holding it makes more sense if you really want an accurate count!


At any time you can restart your step count by touching the “Reset” button. Touching the “i” button will bring up a screen that describes how to properly use the app. There is also a “Sensitivity’ meter here as well. By default the meter is set in the middle and is set at the ideal sensitivity, based on an average person’s step.


There’s not really much else to this app, but it does what it’s designed to do well.  If you’re workout routine regularly includes steps (whether on a machine or on real steps) you may want to check out iStair.  This app can make keeping track of your workout as easy as holding your phone as you walk! For expectant mothers, being prepared for the day they give birth instills a peace of mind that makes the actual day less stressful and more memorable.  But when the day arrives, there is no guarantee you’ll be in the right place or with the right person the moment your water breaks.  However, with BabyDay by Optimized Telecom Inc, mothers have access to an alternative way to contact the people closest to them, allowing them to send a collective message to those who may be concerned.

When you begin, BabyDay will first ask to sync with your current location, then have you enter your personal data, including name and telephone number.  On the next page, users will be asked to enter contact information for their partner, including their name, email address and telephone number.  You may pick from your contacts list to make input even easier.  At the bottom of the screen, you will find a pre-programmed message that will be sent to your partner when the baby is about to be born.  You may edit this message to suit the specifics of your circumstance.

The next page allows users to add as many friends and family members as they want to notify about the big day as well.  Once all the contact information has been set, users will be taken to the main screen, which displays buttons that will quickly email or call those you’ll need most.  This message will send each contact your pre-programmed message, as well as how you are doing, where you’re going, where you are and a map thanks to BabyDay’s automatic GPS location.  Users may edit their partner’s details and any of their family’s details by using the Settings button under the ‘Call My Partner’ button.  The Settings button also leads to the very detailed Help button, which explains how to use BabyDay step-by-step.

However, besides using the last tab in the bottom navigation bar, which allows you to send announcements once the baby is actually born, users will find themselves locked out of every other feature BabyDay has to offer.  To access all the other functions, users must download the Pro version for $1.99.

With BabyDay Pro, users can then access the ability to run the due date clock, collect photos of their pregnancy in the provided gallery, keep a dated journal of all their pregnancy thoughts and experiences, and call emergency medical services right within the application itself.  However, the free version provides none of these attractive functions, reminding you they are not available every time you tap one of the buttons, asking you if you’d like to buy the complete version with each tap.

Unfortunately, the free version only provides you with the slightly less practical aspect of the entire BabyDay concept in general.  While it may seem ideal to alert your partner and entire family with the press of a single button, there remains the fact that you probably won’t be thinking about emailing every single person you know.  A mother’s main concern would be to contact her partner and get to the hospital as quickly as possible, neglecting their iPhone except to call their partner directly.  To get the most out of BabyDay, mothers-to-be are probably going to find the full version much more worthwhile, which seems to have been the plan all along considering they do nothing but dangle the additional functions in front of your face every step of the way.

Cloud storage has felt, to me, like a load of hooey.  Things never seemed to sync as seamlessly as I wanted, there were long and cumbersome upload and download processes and the whole thing was too much trouble than it was worth.

Wait.  Nevermind.  Dropbox is here.  And with it comes truly seamless syncing between devices, background uploads/downloads, drag-and-drop file sharing and even public folders and automatic link generators…meaning I can share a file with people who don’t even have Dropbox.

And with Dropbox’s free iPhone app, I can now get all my documents right on my phone.  It’s pretty damn cool.

Having a picture that corresponds to everyone in your iPhone’s contact book is a cool feature, but few people take the time to actually load those pictures in. My Face, an app designed by Paragon Services, Inc., aims to make the whole process much simpler.

The upside: After you enter your info and load your own picture, your work is done. And the process doesn’t take long at all; when you open the app, go into Settings and enter your phone number, initials, country and carrier. Tap “Choose My Picture” to either take a pic of yourself or select one from your photo album, then back on the main menu, tap “Upload My Picture.” To ensure no one else uploads a photo assigned to your number, My Face will send you a text with a link you must tap to confirm. After that, your picture is up and you’re done.

Another plus: You’re in control of what picture is assigned to your contact information in other people’s phone books.

The downside: Of course, the only way the pictures will pop up in your contact book is if your contacts are also using the My Face app. But honestly, I hesitate to call that a downside; this app is free, it takes half a minute to set up, and after that your picture is automatically in your (My Face using) friends’ iPhones, and vice versa.

Something I think is important to point out is that this app is independent of social networking sites – I admit that when I saw the name, I thought it had something to do with Facebook, and I dislike apps (or anything) that make me register with my Facebook or Twitter info. My Face doesn’t do that – your phone number is all you need.

You can use the “Tell My Friends” to email a little info and link about My Face to your friends, an easy way to get them in the loop and start seeing their smiling faces on your phone when they call. Considering it’s free and simple to use, I highly recommend downloading this one!

This is a great feature, but how can you tell for sure that the people in your contacts list are on the same network as you, to take advantage of this service?

DoubleCheck from Double IP S.A. looks to solve this problem. With a simple interface, you can type in any mobile number and find out what carrier that number is assigned to. Works with all carriers in over 200 countries. It identifies the mobile carrier, and marks it in your address book, so you can easily tell if you’re making a free call, or using your plan’s minutes.

You can then tap the contact, and assign the carrier to the contact in your address book. This way, when you go to call some one, you know right away, whether they are on the same carrier as you, or not.

Ingenuity is a must when it comes to creating an application.  With dozens of developers trying to cater to the same needs, coming up with an idea that stands out as unique is nearly impossible in a world that truly does seem to have an app for everything.  But when it comes time to put your creative idea in motion, one should make sure that the effort is worth the demand.

While Alpha Dialer by AgaveTEQ, LLC certainly presents a thoughtful, clever concept, it does not serve a pressing need we are all looking to fill.  With Alpha Dialer, users can dial vanity phone numbers (like 1-800-FLOWERS or 1-800-DENTIST) just by typing the word using their iPhone’s regular keyboard.  Alpha Dialer will convert the letters into their numeric counterparts and dial the actual number directly within the application.  Simply tap the application’s icon and type.  Special buttons underneath the entry box make it easy to choose your vanity number’s given prefix.  (Prefixes include 1-800, 1-866, 1-877 and 1-888.)

The entire concept of Alpha Dialer centers on the fact that vanity phone numbers may be easy to remember but difficult to convert to numeric form, especially on a Smartphone.  They claim that trying to recall which numbers signify each letter is a difficult task and that this product makes dialing much easier.  However, unlike Alpha Dialer implies, the iPhone’s keypad not only displays the numbers, but the letters they represent as well.  And while it may take a few moments more to spell out the vanity number with the numeric keypad instead of just typing the letters freely, it seems much more practical to waste a few extra seconds every now and again than to waste money on an application you will rarely use.

Honestly, I’m not quite sure why I (or anyone else) would pay $2.99 for an application that can perform such a rarely necessary task.  Perhaps, if Alpha Dialer were no more than $.99, it might be more enticing.  However, the likelihood of needing such an application frequently is slim to none.  The only way Alpha Dialer would ever come to pay for itself is if the given user called vanity numbers at least a few times a week, if not every day.  And while this may be perfect for some users, the average customer will find Alpha Dialer to be pointless.  Though I do give them much credit for coming up with a simple yet convenient concept, perhaps they should offer a few more features to go along with that $2.99 price tag.
